San Cataldo – Combining art, music, and tradition to express the profound soul of our region. This is the spirit with which the video "Art in Piazza Calvario", a work strongly supported by the San Cataldo Pro Loco and created in close collaboration with Skerma Creative Agency.
The exclusive screening of the short film represented much more than a simple cultural event: it was an important opportunity for civic sharing and a profound rediscovery of our community identity.
A journey through ceramics and notes of tradition
The video highlights one of the most evocative and significant places in San Cataldo: Piazza Calvario. This monumental complex houses 18 ceramic panels (each measuring approximately 2 x 2 meters) in its aedicules, designed by the most prestigious ceramic schools in Italy, creating an ideal artistic bridge linking Liguria to Puglia, Lombardy to Sardinia, Umbria, Campania, Tuscany, and, of course, Sicily.
Guiding the viewer on this visual journey are the deep and moving notes of Maestro Eliana Miraglia, who masterfully performed "'U Chiantu di Marì," a cornerstone of the San Cataldese tradition. The short film also features the special and poetic participation of young Marta Scarlata, symbolizing the passing of the baton of memory to the new generations.
The project was directed by Carlo Falzone and Giovanni Mammano (who also supervised the technical aspects), together with Maestro Eliana Miraglia and the president of the Pro Loco, Salvatore Scarlata.
The debate: preserving the past to invest in the future
The meeting, enriched by institutional greetings from Mayor Gioacchino Comparato and musical interludes, offered the opportunity for an important moment of reflection on the future of local cultural heritage:
Salvatore Scarlata (President of Pro Loco) highlighted the national scope of the site, recalling, among other things, the artistic twinning established with the city of Impruneta (FI), home of the artist Luca Vanni, author of one of the panels.
Historian Luigi Bontà retraced the historical stages of Calvary, recalling how over time it has occupied various urban sites (from the original Mount Tabor to today), underlining the urgency of a city museum space.
Claudio Arcarese, Giuseppe Cazzetta and Giovanni Mammano recalled the local historical and artistic memory, launching a warm appeal on the need to find a stable and dignified home for the “Sanpaoloni” and the “Misteri” (the historic papier-mâché statuary groups), which were originally intended to be housed in the chapels of Calvary.
Archpriest Don Alessandro Giambra shared and supported the need for a safe exhibition space, ideal for housing and showcasing the precious treasures of the Mother Church and its Patron Saint.
Towards national festivals: the Pro Loco will accompany you in discovering San Cataldo
The short film will not remain confined within the city walls: the aim is in fact to promote the uniqueness of San Cataldo by having it participate in regional and national festivals dedicated to local traditions and wide-ranging cultural events.
As Pro Loco, we are proud of this milestone, transforming historical memory into a living resource for the future of tourism in our municipality. We remind all members, residents, and tourists that the Pro Loco of San Cataldo is always available for in-depth guided tours to discover Piazza Calvario and all the artistic, religious, and monumental heritage of our splendid city. We look forward to seeing you!
