Piazza Calvario in San Cataldo: An Open-Air Museum of Faith and Ceramic Art.

Dominating one of the highest points of the town, Piazza Calvario represents the spiritual and monumental heart of San Cataldo. For over 150 years, this site has been the hub of Good Friday pilgrimages and the natural setting for the "Scinnenza," the evocative reenactment of the Passion and Death of Jesus.

A National Artistic Unique.

Piazza Calvario is not just a place of worship, but a true national ceramics museum. Thanks to the collaboration with the "Associazione Italiana Città della Ceramica," the best schools in Italy were selected to create the works.

Today, the site represents the only monument in the country capable of uniting in a single context the highest artistic expression of 18 different ceramic traditions. Each panel reflects the techniques, materials, and cultural identity of its region of origin, making the square a complex of exceptional artistic value.

The Ceramic Excellences Present

The works bear the signature of master ceramists from the most prestigious centers of Italy:

Sicily: San Cataldo (CL), Caltagirone (CT), Sciacca (AG), Santo Stefano di Camastra (ME).

Southern Italy: Grottaglie (TA), Ariano Irpino (AV), San Lorenzello (BN).

Central Italy: Castelli (TE), Deruta (PG), Gualdo Tadino (PG), Impruneta (FI), Tavullia (PU).

Northern Italy: Faenza (RA), Lodi (LO), Mondovì (CN), Albisola Superiore (SV), Nove (VI).

An archaeological site approximately 5 km from the center of San Cataldo, it represents the indigenous and Lenized historic center spread across the five highest hills in the area. Numerous archaeological remains are present in the area, from the sanctuary located in the Sanctuary district to the residential area, to the Necropolises carved into the rock: the Northern Necropolis (first hill) and the Western Necropolis (on the fifth hill), up to the City Walls built on a limestone block base with an overlying elevation of unbaked clay bricks (a technique used for the Timoleontee city walls at Capo Soprano in the city of Gela).
