Within a maze of streets nestled on one of San Cataldo's highest hills, you'll enter the heart of the city, discovering nooks, courtyards, 20th-century residential typologies, and views and glimpses of Eastern Sicily (Enna, Mount Etna, part of the Salso River Valley, and the Erei Mountains). The tour includes Via Marsala, Via Bentivegna, Via Bellomo, Via Mazzarino, Via Vicari, Via Fasciana, Via Marsala, and Via Regina Margherita, concluding with a visit to the Mother Church.
As you stroll through the streets, you'll be served breakfast with "a 'ngiambella," a biscuit made unique to San Cataldo from flour, sugar, and eggs, which takes on a distinctive flavor when dipped in a glass of milk.
Piazza Calvario in San Cataldo: An Open-Air Museum of Faith and Ceramic Art.
Perched on one of the highest points of the town, Piazza Calvario represents the spiritual and monumental heart of San Cataldo. For over 150 years, this site has been the hub of Good Friday pilgrimages and the natural setting for the "Scinnenza," the evocative reenactment of the Passion and Death of Jesus.
A National Artistic Unique,
Piazza Calvario is not only a place of worship, but also a true national ceramics museum. Thanks to a collaboration with the "Associazione Italiana Città della Ceramica," the finest schools in Italy were selected to create the works.
Today, the site is the only monument in the country capable of uniting the highest artistic expression of 18 different ceramic traditions in a single context. Each panel reflects the techniques, materials, and cultural identity of its region of origin, making the square a complex of exceptional artistic value.
