Visit to the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi (Formerly Capuchin Monastery)

Description

Built by Prince Galletti in 1724 next to the Capuchin convent, it was consecrated in 1736 and dedicated to Saint Joseph. In 1866, with the suppression of the Capuchins, the church became municipal.

The single-nave church's main work is the majestic wooden altarpiece of the main altar, adorned with a variety of woods, including fir, boxwood, walnut, and cypress. It houses a total of nineteen statuettes and 156 relics. Among the statues are that of the Immaculate Conception, four figures representing the evangelists, and at the base of the altar, the theological virtues: faith, hope, and charity. There are also the archangels Gabriel, Michael, and Raphael. Finally, the mother-of-pearl Supper at Emmaus is located in the tabernacle door.

At the four side altars we find the statue of the Madonna Assunta from 1957, the Crucifix with Our Lady of Sorrows and Saint John, a canvas depicting the Madonna with Baby Jesus and on the sides Saint Michael, Saint Joseph, Saint Francis, Saint Clare and Saint Cataldo.
