Stations of the Cross and the Way of Light | Ceramics of Piazza Calvario

Description

The monumental site was created to host the main event of San Cataldo, "A Scinnenza," which takes place during Holy Week in San Cataldo. This tradition has continued throughout San Cataldo.

The monumental complex is made up of 14 chapels arranged on two arms that delimit the square until they join in the central chapel below the wooden Crucifix.

The chapels were originally built to house the papier-mâché sacred groups depicting the Stations of the Cross.

In the early 2000s the complex was renovated, also changing the destination of the 14 chapels

In place of the sacred groups, 14 ceramic panels (1.60 x 2.00) were installed, representing the Stations of the Cross , while in the central chapel 4 larger panels representing the Via Lucis , for a total of 18 panels.

The importance of the monumental complex, in addition to the cultural and traditional identity inherent in the structure and the traditions perpetuated over time, is also that of being a "unique" example of the highest artistic expression of the Italian Ceramic School represented in a single context.

The works were created by ceramists from the cities of Castelli (TE), Faenza (RA), Mondovì (CN), Grottaglie (TA), Oristano (OR), Impruneta (FI), Sciacca (AG), Caltagirone (CT), San Lorenzello (BN), Tavullia (PU), Deruta (PG), Nove (VI), Albisola Superiore (SV), Lodi (LO), San Cataldo (CL), Santo Stefano di Camastra (ME), Gualdo Tadino (PG), Ariano Irpino (AV).
